Renault Clio - The first car lifted by likes

Renault wanted to prove that passion could indeed lift a vehicle off the ground… god only knows why. But they did. So they built this app. Every time someone ‘liked’ the app, a real-world thumbs up was placed in the box on the seesaw alongside the car. After over 16,000 likes, the car was finally lifted into the air, one lucky person won the car and the world became a happier place.

As much as I ‘like’ the idea. I’m a little confused what the link to the product is, apart from it being a nice mechanic to win it. If you can indeed decipher this cryptic for me, please feel free to let me know. Until then, I’m off to ‘like’ some brands to try and win some free shit, catch you later.

Is Skrillex Quest the future of music marketing?
Something magical happened to me this morning. I stumbled upon a new advergame created to promote the new single by Skrillex. I always enter into these experiences with a little bit of caution to tell you the truth, but this one just seems different to me. The game, which pays hommage to old school classic Zelda, takes you on a colourful, energy filled journey to save a princess.
It’s not just the visuals and music that struck me though, it’s the quality of the experience. The game continually mixes things up just enough to keep you interested, and it kept me engaged for near on 20 minutes. I mean, 20 minutes?!? By todays standards, to have a consumer engaged with your product for this long is almost unheard of. YouTube videos may gain 3 minutes of my time if they’re lucky, but make the experience quality enough, with just the right level of interaction, and it appears this could be the future of brand engagement.
I know that content such as this has a certain niche appeal to it, but I would much rather interact with music in this way then passively consume it. What are your thoughts? Are we starting to see more original ideas in the music marketing space? Is this simply a fad, or are we looking at the future of music marketing?

Old Spice - 4 1/2 weeks to save the world

With just 4 and a half weeks to go until the Mayans have predicted we are all going to die. Who better to save the world than ex-pro basketball player Dikembe Mutombo? Well, I can think of a few other people that I’d prefer to be looking out for us, but with Batman on holiday, and Superman not coming back till summer next year, he may be our only hope.

This Old Spice campaign takes the form of a series of weekly games, one unlocked each week in the run up to the end of the world. Each is slightly different, but all share a very nice, retro art style that makes the entire site look like something out of a 1980s arcade. With some funny writing, and a cool pixel look, I couldn’t help but enjoy the games on offer. It feels like they could have done more with it, as there appears to be no social elements, unlockables or any other reason for me to repeat play, but it’s certainly fun while it lasts.

Have a play for yourself here and let me know what you think.

Tweet to shoot brings duck hunt to life

On September 13th and 14th, Neiman Labs thought they would run a little twitter experiment in their office. By hooking up a Nerf gun to a micro-computer they were able to turn tweets into real-world shots. Users could point the gun at a large projection of the classic NES game Duck Hunt and have a shot simply by using the hashtag #TweetToShoot. What’s the point you may ask? And of course if you have to ask that, you really shouldn’t be reading this blog in the first place, shame on you.

Unfortunately I missed the big event, but the site is still alive if you want to check it out… You know, in the hope that they turn it on again (begs).

Mount Jackmore Advergame promotes Borderlands 2

To support the launch of the new First Person Shooter, Borderlands 2, 2K Games have created a fun game where people can win daily prizes. The game takes the face of one of the characters within the game and brings it to life as a rock face in full 3D. Each day, people can log in and shoot 100 rounds of ammo at the face. Shoot a rock enough times to turn it gold and potentially win. The game shows other people shooting the rock in real-time so you have to be quick if you want to grab the prize. By sharing the game, you get more ammo too, giving people more reason to invite friends to the experience.

It seems that video game delevopers are getting more creative with the way they market games to their fans, creating games and experiences to help get people excited. With previous efforts like Twisted Metal’s Shoot the truck, and now this, I look forward to seeing what else they come up with in the future to advertise the interactive medium to fans.

Start shooting for yourself here.

Run Puma Run
Being a bit of a gamer, I’m always keen to see branded games, and what they can bring to the table. This latest effort from Puma has some great personality. The art style is great, taking me back to my 8-bit retro days. It’s bright and colourful, and with a ‘never-ending’ style to the gameplay I can imagine people getting lost for ages trying to beat their high scores. It may be simple, but it’s a nice tie-in with the Olympics and great fun.

Man-Eater: A fun game for your commute

Commutes to work can be dull. You’ve looked at Facebook, scanned Twitter, hell even Pinterest has nothing new. What do you do next? Well, Daniel Disselkoen thinks he may have the answer. This simple student projects uses nothing more than a sticker on the window and instructions on the back of a chair to create a simple game for you to play on your way to work. Close one eye, look out the window and try to ‘eat’ as many pedestrians as you can. Very simple, low-tech fun but a cute idea all the same.

Nike create shoe-swapping social network with Shoe-Boxxxx
Nike have just released an interesting looking social app on Facebook that sees fans swapping virtual shoes across the internet. Users simply register through the app and are awarded three pairs of kicks from the companies rich heritage. There are some classic trainers in there, enough to get any fan salivating. I have had a play myself, and it all works well, with the kind of polish you would expect from a global company like Nike. It’s easy to get started and I was up and swapping in minutes.
So far, no one has traded with me, but I’m sure it will happen soon. It looks like people are engaging too. With over 15,000 pairs of trainers out there already it shouldn’t be hard for people to complete a collection. The ability to customise your collection and show it off is also a nice touch. I can’t help but think there needs to be a little more to it, as trading virtual goods without an additional ‘game’ element seems a little stilted, but maybe some of theses issues can be addressed in future updates.
What do you think? A cool brand game or a little over cooked?

ALDO - shoe paradise
Stumbled upon this cool little game for ALDO shoes. It’s a very simple mechanic - simply move up and down to avoid obstacles and collect shoes. Collect them all to unlock a discount to redeem in store. The execution is what takes this to the next level though. With real people providing the legs for the characters and a fun soundtrack, you really get sucked into the bright, funky world. Flash can still surprise me from time to time.

Smart Car presents ‘EBALL’

Love this installation piece from Smart Car in Germany. Coming from a powerful insight that the electric cars are extremely powerful over the first few metres, people were challenged to participate in a real-world game of Pong that saw them driving back and forth to control the paddle. It’s a fantastic interplay between the car and the virtual action and a really innovative way to generate excitement around a product. The work comes via BBDO Germany.
