MySpace is back from near death

It must have only been a couple of years ago that MySpace launched a new visual identity to try and draw people back to its platform. The once king of social media has struggled to move with the times, to keep up with other networks innovations and to position itself properly in the market. With a fresh redesign, and a new identity (which looks a lot like its first logo to tell you the truth), they are once again poised to become relevant once again. The interface is modern and a joy to explore, the imagery is large and striking and the experience seems familiar to anyone that has been swiping their way through tablet apps these past years.

Could this refresh and the backing of Justin Timberlake be enough to bring MySpace back from oblivion? Who knows, one things for sure, it’s got me interested in it once more. And with Facebook now over-populated, and filled to the brim with mums everywhere, this could once again be the platform for kids to express themselves away from prying eyes.

Excited as I am? Sign up for the new MySpace here.

Twisted Metal - Shoot my truck

To launch the new Twisted Metal game for Playstation 3, people are getting the chance to take control of a real automatic gun and fire it at a Twisted Metal ice-cream truck. What better way to spend this Valentines Day than shooting your load on a semi-automatic. Genius.

Take control of the gun yourself over at the site. You can also see the uncensored version of the launch video…. damn you YouTube!

BMW tablet controlled projection

BMW were launching their new model in South Africa and wanted something innovative and interactive. This large-scale projection screen let passers by race using iPads given out by staff. All the results, and leaderboards were housed on the Facebook page, further raising awareness and amplifying the event through social channels. Although the technology is nothing new, it’s still a nice implementation, and looks pretty fun to play.

iPad 2 - The revolution we were waiting for?

So, overnight apple announced their new iteration of the iPad 2. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will know it’s thinner, faster and finally comes complete with those cameras (both front and rear) that everyone thought should have been on the last model.

Being an iPad owner myself, I have to say I’m secretly pleased with the improvements made, as none of them excite me enough to want to trade my old model in. Yes you can shoot and edit video, yes you will be able to video skype (eventually), yes the games and apps will run faster and yes there is GarageBand pre-installed (so now you have another place to not use it on). But are these enough improvements to warrant an upgrade? I’m not so sure.

I’m not let down, the iPad is still a great piece of kit that comes in useful in my everyday life. Hell, I’m even writing this article now on it. The first model was a revolution in portable computing, the iPad 2? I would say more of an evolution.

For people that didn’t buy one first time around, this is going to be the model they were waiting for For people in the market for a new laptop, this could now be a viable option. For the rest of us, I think we’ll just wait for this time next year and see what apple can pull out of the bag (retina display and IOS 5 anyone?).
