Run with Ryan

A simple idea. To allow people to experience the pace of marathon runner Ryan Hall, asics created this large format digital screen that allowed people to race him over 60ft. It’s a good use of media space, and actually not too hard too pull off when you think about it as it involves no crazy interaction. A nice, fun piece of advertising.

The worlds biggest individual marathon
Being a bit of a long distance runner, I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon this new campaign from Sony Ericsson to promote their new Xperia Active handset. The Xperiathon is a one day racethat pits people virtually against each other in the worlds biggest individual marathon. Simply choose the app you are going to record it on, and turn up anywhere for the start of the race. It’s a nice use of technology to create an event that despite running alone, feels like you are running against others. I’ve entered, have you?

Zombies Run!

I’m a big fan of KickStarter projects. It’s a great way of getting non-client based apps and projects off the ground, and this one looks like it could really be something a little different. The simple premise is combining the thrill of running apps (like Nike+), with a Zombie-based game to form Zombies, Run!

Users load up the app and go out on their run. Not only does it map your run, and do all the stuff you would expect from a running app, but it adds a story-driven game experience as a layer over the top. Between songs, the runner gets audio that help set the tone of the post apocalyptic world. Old radio-style reports fill your headphones alongside the groans of zombies near by. Collect virtual items out and about as you run and use them to upgrade your virtual base.

It’s a simple idea, but really adds a cool layer of engagement over something that many struggle to motivate themselves to do. If the underlying story is compelling enough, and the execution lives up to its hype this really could be a fun, unique experience for runners who are looking for a new challenge. Keep an eye on this as its 2012 launch draws closer.

Nike - Take Mokum Graffiti Challenge

Great campaign from Boondoggle, Amsterdam. Using Nike+ technology, runners were challenged to create virtual art from their running routes around the streets of Amsterdam. The Facebook App allowed people to plan and colour their routes, then using Nike+ they went out and actually ran them in the real world. A live event was also staged for those that took part. Although the stats aren’t world-changing, the idea at the heart is great, and it uses an existing technology in a new and creative way.
